Ultan Power

Ultan Power is Professor of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences (MDBS) at Queen's University Belfast, and Professor of Molecular Virology at the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine. In partnership with Professor Mike Shields, of the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine he is engaged in research into one of the biggest causes of severe acute lung disease (bronchiolitis) in young infants worldwide – respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Dr. Power’s research is focused on studying respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pathogenesis and how this can be prevented by vaccines or treated with drugs.

As researcher at Queen’s he is at the heart of supporting global efforts to understand the Coronavirus (COVID-19). As they advance our knowledge of the global challenges presented by COVID-19, they are leading new research projects to address COVID-19, supporting local, national and international efforts to expand our knowledge of the pandemic and deploying this enhanced intelligence to develop solutions that will benefit the society in Northern Ireland, across the UK and globally.
