Medical progress requires a constant increase in knowledge about life processes. These findings are first acquired in cells, organs and laboratory animals. But then the question inevitably arises as to how they can be transferred to humans. Research studies on humans are therefore indispensable. Research on humans always creates controversial areas of tension about possible, desirable and ethically justifiable developments in medical science. Medical research on humans is only ethically justifiable and recognized in the Swiss legal system if the inviolability of the human dignity of all persons involved is guaranteed.
