Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. Interdisciplinary Bladder Cancer Center R&D Centre

The Ludwig-Maximilians-University was founded in 1472. The Urologische Klinik (‘clinic’ has more rights and privileges than a ‘department’ in our system) was founded as an independent ‘Klinik’ in 1968 by Prof. Egbert Schmiedt. The best known invention of the department during his time was Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy ESWL, introduced in 1980. His successor, Prof. Alfons Hofstetter, worked on Photodymanic diagnosis of bladder cancer which today is a part of the routine diagnostic work up of bladder cancer.
