The Shanghai Cancer Institute (SCI) was founded in1958. It has been an independent institution on cancer research,affiliated to the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Health. TheSCI was identified by WHO as one of the WHO Collaborating Centresfor Research on Cancer in China in 1980. On the approval of theNational Science and Technology Committee, the State Key Laboratogyof Oncogenes & Related Genes (SKLOKG) was established on thebasis of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in1985. The Shanghai Research and Development Facilities for GeneTherapy with the GMP level was established within the SCI in 1996.Cancer Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University was approved byChinese Ministry of Education in 2003, by the cooperation ofShanghai Municipal Bureau of Public Health and Shanghai JiaotongUniversity.
