The Longevity Summit
Asian countries like Japan, Singapore, South Korea and China are facing a demographic crisis. The aged are starting to dramatically
outnumber the young, an issue that affects every aspect of society. Businesses are struggling to adapt to the changing nature of their
workforces, and health care systems are coming under increasing financial strain. While governments are acting — Singapore has
signaled a rise in GST tax and Japan is investing in pension reform and productivity improvements — they may not be doing enough to
prepare their societies for the reality of living to one hundred.
In 2017, for the first time, The Economist brought together Asian business leaders, political decision-makers and health-care
entrepreneurs to discuss how to make longevity a source of healthy innovation. At the Longevity Summit 2018, The Economist will build
on this momentum to foster thinking on the topic of “living to 100”.
The event will answer the following key questions:
● How are the interests of individuals, governments and businesses aligning around longevity?
● Can developing countries establish ‘ageing in place’ infrastructure and community care rather than expensive inpatient hospital
systems?
● How can companies incorporate longevity into their operations?
● What can other countries learn from the policies and ideas already being implemented to ease the burden of ageing around the
region?
● What’s stopping longevity-enthusiasts and entrepreneurs from successfully executing on their business strategies? -
Mitochondria in Aging and Age-Related Disease (J2)
Neurodegeneration, cancer, metabolic diseases, inflammation and mitochondrial signaling pathways
Aging is the greatest risk factor for most human diseases, yet the underlying reasons for this are not clear and hence remain under intense investigation. Mitochondria have long been associated with aging as the cornerstones of the “mitochondrial” and “free radical” theories of aging. However, that the role of mitochondria in aging is simply due to declines in ATP production and increased oxidative stress via reactive oxygen species production is giving way to more complex hypotheses. These are driven by the realization that mitochondria are dynamic and have multiple additional roles in cell and organismal physiology (e.g., signaling and immunity). The goal of this conference is to bring together investigators working at the interface of mitochondria and aging to begin to develop network theories of mitochondrial contributions to aging and age-related diseases that take into account both “old” and “new” functions of mitochondria. Topics covered include neurodegeneration, cancer, metabolic diseases, inflammation and mitochondrial signaling pathways. It is expected that this conference will facilitate new interactions and collaborations at the interface of aging and mitochondrial biology. This should catalyze new research toward therapies for age-related diseases based on selectively targeting mitochondrial functions and signaling pathways in specific physiological and disease contexts. -

57th Session of the Commission for Social Development
Since the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) has been the key United Nations body in charge of the follow up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action. Originally known as the Social Commission but renamed in 1966, CSocD was established by ECOSOC res. 10 (II) (1946). Its purpose was to advise ECOSOC on social policies of a general character and, in particular, on all matters in the social field not covered by the specialised inter-governmental agencies. The Commission’s mandate was further developed by ECOSOC resolutions 830J (XXXII) (1961), 1139 (XLI) (1966) and 1996/7. Since 2006, the Commission has taken up key social development themes as part of its follow up to the outcome of the Copenhagen Summit. -
3d International Symposium Healthy Ageing
Healthy Ageing – living free of diseases, functional decline, and disabilities
The workshop is organzied by the LRA Healthy Ageing and supported by the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP).
Healthy Ageing – living free of diseases, functional decline, and disabilities as long as possible while keeping up high levels of well-being – should be an achievable goal for most older people in modern industrialized societies. In order to achieve this goal interdisciplinary research is required to obtain knowledge and environmental factors promoting the preservation of health, which can be used to develop novel strategies for intervention.

3rd Interventions in Aging Conference
Translational Gerontology, Immunity and Aging, Human Aging, Aging in Mice, Mitochondria and Aging, Cellular Senescence, Metabolism and Aging, Longevity Pathways
A plethora of genetic, dietary and pharmacological interventions can extend healthy lifespan in laboratory animals, and can delay or ameliorate diverse aging-related diseases. Many of the signalling pathways involved are evolutionarily conserved, and are starting to be implicated in human aging. This raises the intriguing possibility of performing preventative medicine against the chronic diseases of our time by targeting the main risk factor for all of them, namely aging. Two important current challenges in the field are (1) to understand the downstream pathways by which longevity interventions combat age-related loss of function and pathology, and (2) to translate the findings into the extension of human healthspan.
This third meeting will continue to explore these topics, with particular emphasis on the systemic environment, mitochondria, biomarkers and frailty, immune aging and the protective effects of natural products. -

Harvard/Glenn Symposium on Aging
Extending healthy productive human life through research
Each year, the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging hosts the Harvard Symposium on Aging with a mission to educate the wider research community about advancements in this fast-paced field and to stimulate collaborative research in this area. We have been fortunate to have many of the leaders in the aging field speak at the symposia. The reasons for accelerating research into the molecular biology of aging are clear. First and foremost, the number of aged individuals in developed countries is growing rapidly, which is going to place an unprecedented burden on the families and the economies of those nations. Because chronic illness in the elderly is a major medical cost, enormous savings would be achieved if mortality and morbidity could be compressed within a shorter duration of time at the end of life. A study by the RAND Corporation concluded that advances in medicine arising from aging research would be one of the most cost-effective approaches to age-related disease. Advances in aging research have shown that it is possible to extend the healthy lifespan of laboratory animals through genetic and pharmacological means. Many leaders in the aging field predict that significant strides will be made in understanding how human health and lifespan are regulated, leading to novel medicines to forestall and treat diseases of aging such as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease. -

5th International Symposium on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration (ISPNR)
"As in previous ISPNRs, this interdisciplinary meeting will bring together experts, researchers and students from diverse disciplines. The symposium is expected to act as a platform to present and discuss new developments in the broad field of nerve repair and regeneration. The study of peripheral nerve repair and regeneration has gained considerable interest in regenerative medicine.
Despite the scientific advancements, however, application to the patients is still limited. It appears that in order to optimize the strategy for tissue engineering of the peripheral nerve in the clinical perspective, more basic research is needed. Neuroscientists need to strive for a new level of innovation which brings together (in a multi-translational approach) the main pillars of regenerative medicine, namely 1) Reconstructive microsurgery, 2) Transplantation (of tissues, cells and genes), 3) Material science and bioengineering, 4) Physical therapy and biostimulation, 5) Bioelectronics and bioengineering.
In line with this growing interest, and following the success of the preceding symposia in 2009, 2014, 2015 and 2017 the ISPNR aims at bringing together an international and interdisciplinary panel of scientists who critically address some of the most important issues in this emerging biomedical field." -

Bioinformatics in Ageing Research - Satellite Workshop
Systems biology of aging and lifespan control
Population aging in the 19th to 21st centuries is unprecedented in human history. Although average life expectancy is still increasing, we will have to confront the same degenerative diseases as in the last century. Within the world wide health systems, the major goal will change from just treating isolated single diseases to an increase in healthspan. Ageing is the most important common risk factor and the basis for most of the age-related chronic diseases. In model systems, we have learned a great deal about the mechanisms of ageing and are able to modify health as well as lifespan by genetic, pharmacological or lifestyle interventions. It will be the goal in the future to translate such results into humans. The purpose of this meeting is (1) to discuss aging as a modifiable risk factor of diseases, (2) to promote greater communication among the world-wide community of individuals engaged in ageing research and (3) to invite young students to join this field of research. -

Keystone Symposia: Cancer Stem Cells: Advances in Biology and Clinical Translation (T2)
Stem Cell Biology
Preponderant experimental and clinical evidence has demonstrated that pervasive cancer cell heterogeneity in both phenotypic presentations and functional properties exists, such that a population of cancer cells with cardinal stem cell properties (i.e., cancer stem cells) pre-exists in untreated tumors and spatiotemporally evolves during tumor progression and therapeutic interventions. Recent studies have also revealed significant phenotypic and functional plasticity in cancer cells, regulated by both genetic networks and epigenetic mechanisms. Both cancer cell heterogeneity and plasticity constitute major barriers to efficient and durable clinical treatments. Ever since the revival of the cancer stem cell research field around the turn of the century, we have made great strides in identifying and elucidating the biology of cancer stem cells in virtually all tumor systems. Significant progress has also been made in understanding how cancer stem cells interact with the cellular constituents and soluble factors in the proinflammatory and immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment. Facilitated by an explosion of technical advances in recent years, especially single-cell RNA-seq, we are achieving an unprecedented appreciation of the complexity of the cellular heterogeneity of human tumors. Significantly, novel therapeutic strategies that target cancer stem cells and cancer cell heterogeneity and plasticity are rapidly progressing to the clinical arena. This conference is organized to recapitulate these recent advances in our understanding of cancer stem cell biology and, importantly, the clinical translation of targeting cancer stem cells. -

Keystone Symposia: Hypoxia: Molecules, Mechanisms and Disease (A3)
Hypoxia
Hypoxia research reflects a dynamic and rapidly expanding field with growing implications ranging from basic molecular biology to medicine. Changes in cellular oxygen availability secondary to environmental challenges or diseases, trigger a broad array of adaptive responses that can be rapid (seconds) or more protracted (weeks to months). The molecules and mechanisms involved in these versatile hypoxia signaling pathways are fundamental to the pathogenesis of highly prevalent medical conditions, among which are respiratory depression, hypertension, tumor progression and inflammation. Moreover, oxygen regulates cellular processes, which are essential to cell reprogramming, development and tissue/organ regeneration. In this conference on Hypoxia, the tenth in the series of Keystone Symposia, experts from basic, clinical and industrial backgrounds will gather to update the status of the field, to discuss the most relevant discoveries and their applications, and to envision the conceptual and technological trends for upcoming years. The conference is designed to provide a broad coverage of the hypoxia field, with emphasis in translational strategies and perspectives. Keystone Symposia: Beyond a Million Genomes: From Discovery to Precision Health (A4)
Genetic Variation to Mechanisms of Human Disease
With advances and decreasing costs of high-throughput genotyping and DNA sequencing technologies, we now know more about the human genome than that of any other species. Sequence variation, both common and rare, contribute to great inter-individual phenotypic variation within it. A deeper understanding of the genetic basis of human health and disease has provided insights into biology and huge opportunities for the development and implementation of more targeted therapies and preventive strategies, which is the goal of precision health. This Keystone Symposium will focus on rapidly advancing and emerging areas of precision health with each session emphasizing the path from discovery to clinical implementation. The Symposium will begin with the state of our current knowledge of the allelic architecture of human disease and how these understandings are being translated into clinical practice. Sessions will cover discovery and translational advances from Mendelian diseases and rare human gene knock-outs to common multifactorial diseases in large genomic databases linked to electronic health record data, and the challenges and opportunities of big data analysis and integration. Other topics will include translating cancer genomics to clinical practice, workshops on clinical interpretation of germline and somatic mutations, pharmacogenomics, and the role of human genomics for novel therapeutic development. Finally, a session will look beyond human sequence variation to consider the role of epigenomics, the microbiome, and environment and lifestyle in precision health. While broad-based, a unifying theme of this Symposium is to bridge basic human genomic discovery to clinical implementation with the intention of attracting and engaging a multidisciplinary audience for thoughtful and open discussion to impact Precision Health. -

Immuno-Metabolic Mechanisms of Atherosclerosis
Aging and senescence
Atherosclerosis and its complications remain the major cause of death in the industrialized world and emerging economies worldwide. Dyslipidemia constitutes a major risk factor for the development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions, but may also lead to systemic disturbances - particularly metabolic dysfunction - that also influence cellular metabolism and function. Atherosclerotic lesions formation is initiated after retention of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins within the arterial wall at sites characterized by low shear stress. Modification of retained lipoproteins and activation of endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells trigger an inflammatory response and provoke a series of cellular events involving complex interactions between vascular cells, innate immune cells (e.g., neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells, mast cells, B1 B lymphocytes, innate lymphoid cells) and cells involved in adaptive immunity to atherosclerosis-related antigens (e.g., Th1, Tregs, B2 lymphocytes). Depending on the balance between pro-inflammatory responses and resolution promoting pathways, lesion development is either delayed or accelerated towards the formation of advanced and complex plaques characterized by chronic unresolved inflammation, extensive matrix remodelling and formation of large thrombogenic necrotic cores. Defective repair and weakening of the protective fibrous cap ultimately leads to plaque disruption, which triggers acute thrombosis and vascular occlusion. The goal of this meeting is to provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of current research on atherosclerosis with a focus on the latest and most exciting developments in the immuno-metabolic mechanisms that govern disease initiation and progression. There is little doubt that the next most exciting therapy to combat cardiovascular disease will be based on targeting biological pathways that will have been discussed during this conference. -
Keystone Symposium: Tumor Metabolism
Accelerating Life Science Discovery
The field of tumor metabolism is one of the oldest in cancer biology, dating back to the seminal work of Otto Warburg in the 1920s. Clinical importance of tumor metabolism is well validated by the successes both of FDG-PET imaging and of antimetabolites as chemotherapeutic agents. The recognition that oncogenes both promote the Warburg effect and activate anabolic pathways has provided impetus for revitalized examination of tumor metabolism. This conference brings together leaders in tumor metabolism to discuss ongoing efforts to understand and target metabolism of proliferating cancer cells and their support network. This conference will address key questions regarding the metabolism of proliferating cells, the unique metabolic features of tumors, and the associated opportunities for therapeutic intervention, including at the interface between metabolism and immunotherapy. A few key scientific questions that conference session will cover include (1) which features of cancer cell metabolism are shared across proliferating cells, and which are cancer specific? (2) what are the dependencies of tumors on host metabolism, and what is the impact of tumor metabolism on host cells, including invading lymphocytes? and (3) how does signaling drive metabolism, and how does metabolism impact signaling and cell fate decisions? Through discussion of these and other questions, the conference aims to generate new scientific ideas, promote collaborations, and enhance dissemination of the latest technologies and best practices for metabolic studies. As the premier venue sharing important unpublished data in the tumor metabolism field, this conference will help to accelerate scientific discovery and the development of new strategies to treat cancer. -

Keystone symposia: Cancer Immunotherapy
Accelerating Life Science Discovery
Cancer immunotherapy by blocking immune inhibitory checkpoints or engineering T cells for adoptive cell transfer is providing an unprecedented level of long-term antitumor activity in patients with several metastatic cancers. However, the majority of patients with advanced cancers still do not experience sustained clinical benefit from immunotherapy. Understanding the mechanistic basis of response and resistance to these therapies and how therapeutic approaches could best be combined will be essential to continue progress. The largest human experiment is currently being conducted with over 1,000 agents and combinations. Understanding the results to date and determining what is working and what combinations are not working will be important to refine our understanding of immunity in patients with cancer. Questions that remain unanswered include: What is the rationale for the multiple immuno-oncology (IO) combinations being tested in the clinic, how do cancers adapt and resist T cell attack, and can we better understand the tumor microenvironment, thus paving the way for new approaches to cancer therapy. New analyses of patient-derived samples provide information on adaptive and genetic resistance mechanisms to immunotherapy. The conference program will include sessions which cover topics such as new analysis techniques, methodologies, and how to integrate high throughput data to provide a more comprehensive understanding of cancer and the immune system. Participants will leave the conference with an understanding of how the advancement of cancer biology will be influenced by a better comprehension of tumor immunology. -
